This January is shaping up to be like last January with the below zero temperatures, which means it’s the time of the year that people see frozen burst water pipes. The Hillsboro Water Utility Company says there are preventative steps to take during the cold weather. Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage, open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, when the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes, keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. It also says that if you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home and set to a temperature no lower than 55° F. This might incur a higher heating bill, but it can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst. For more information on how to prevent frozen pipes or if you believe you have frozen pipes, contact your water utility company.
