Despite recent cold temperatures, the Wisconsin River Power Company (WRPCO) is warning everyone to avoid all winter recreational activities on ice near hydroelectric facilities because of thin ice. WRPCO operates two hydroelectric plants, Petenwell and Castle Rock, on the Wisconsin River. Ice that forms near hydroelectric dams and adjacent reservoirs is often thin, unsafe and inconsistent. Water below the ice continues to flow at a rapid pace not allowing the ice to thicken. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also urges people to be cautious when winter activities happen on ice. It suggests knowing the ice conditions before heading out, traveling in groups, and carry safety gear.
