Do you have old or unwanted chemicals sitting around your sheds or barn?  How about unwanted medications or mercury thermometers?  Have you ever wondered how and where to properly dispose of these items?  Juneau County residents have an opportunity to dispose of these household and agricultural hazardous waste at no charge at the Juneau County Clean Sweep.  This special event is designed specifically to give residents a chance to properly dispose of hazardous waste that should not be thrown out in the normal garbage disposal.  Funding for this program is provided by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Juneau County.

Juneau County residents can dispose of hazardous waste free of charge on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25, 2015.  There are actually three separate Clean Sweep programs.  The Household Clean Sweep, the household prescription round-up and the Agricultural Clean Sweep program.  All the events will be held at the Juneau County Highway Department in Mauston.  On Friday the Clean Sweep program begins with a collection for farmers from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, then from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. it’s open for the Household collection.  On Saturday there will be a household collection from 9:00 to 12:00 noon.

Help protect the environment.  Improperly stored or disposed chemicals can pollute ground and surface waters and cause health risks for you and your family.  Plan on participating in the Juneau County Clean Sweep program on July 24 or 25th.  The Household Hazardous Waste Clean Sweep is on a first come first serve basis.  Pre-registration is required for farmers participating in the Agricultural Clean Sweep, small businesses and those with larger quantities of materials.  To register or for more information and a brochure describing the program in more detail call the Juneau County Land and Water Resources Department at 608-847-7221 – ext. 101 or download a brochure at: http://www.uwex.edu/ces/cty/juneau/cleansweep.html.
