ADRC of Eagle Country – Baraboo/Sauk County to Hold Medicare Presentation March 8

The Aging & Disability Resource Center of Eagle Country – Baraboo/Sauk County will hold a free presentation, “I’m Medicare Eligible/Turning 65: Now What?” on Tuesday, March 8, 2016  at 4:30 p.m. in Room B30 at the Sauk County West Square Building, 505 Broadway in Baraboo. The presentation is tailored to people considering retirement, turning 65, or starting Medicare.

Participants will learn about the basics of Social Security and Medicare parts A, B, C and D.  Elder Benefit Specialists will help participants make informed decisions about their Medicare options. Our session will focus on the important questions confronting people eligible for Medicare such as “Do I need to enroll now?”, “Will I be able to enroll later?” and “Will late penalties apply to me?”

Traffic Stop Leads to Multiple Arrests in Reedsburg

Three Reedsburg residents were arrested after an officer observed their vehicle driving backwards through a stop sign early Friday morning.

On Friday at about 2:00am, Reedsburg police observed a vehicle operate through a stop sign without stopping, while driving backwards, on S. Walnut Street at Vine Street in downtown Reedsburg. The officer stopped the vehicle and questioned the driver and two passengers. Allthree occupants had been drinking.

The driver, 26-year-old Justin Salefski, was ultimately arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated. After questioning, the officer was made aware by Salefski’s wife, 25-year-old Kendra Staniszewski-Salefski, also a passenger in the vehicle, that the couple’s three year old child was left alone at their apartment. Officers immediately responded and took custody of the child who was eventually turned over to a family member. Staniszewski-Salefski was arrested on a probation violation.

The third passenger, 21-year-old Michael Staniszewski was arrested for two counts of Bail-Jumping.

All three were transported to the Sauk County Jail and additional charges for Child Neglect are being forwarded to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

Accident in the Township of Oakdale

There was an accident in the Township of Oakdale Thursday morning. Monroe County Sheriff Scott Perkins said 31-year-old Kyra Lein of rural Camp Douglas was operating a vehicle southbound on County Highway W, approaching Horizon Avenue when a pickup truck failed to stop for the stop sign. Lein was able to slow down in time to avoid striking the truck, but was unable to avoid striking a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, which also failed to stop at the same stop sign.  Lein’s vehicle came to rest on the roadway of County Highway W and the Impala came to rest in the east ditch. The operator of the Impala fled from the scene in the pickup truck, which had turned around and came back to the crash scene.  Perkins said it is currently unknown who was the operator of the Impala or the pickup truck. Lein had possible injuries, but was not transported for medical attention.  Her passengers in the vehicle were not injured in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Wisconsin DNR to Host Online Coyote Chat Feb. 23

Those interested in learning more about coyotes in Wisconsin are reminded to join Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources experts for an online chat Tuesday, Feb. 23 at noon.

One Injured in Rollover Accident in Monroe County

One person was injured in a rollover accident in Monroe County Saturday morning.  Sheriff Scott Perkins said 23-year-old Anna G. Radke of rural Wilton was traveling west bound on State Highway 33 in the Town of Jefferson when she lost control of her vehicle on black ice. The vehicle entered the north ditch and rolled. She was transported with non-life threatening injuries to Sparta Mayo. The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Two Tomah Residents Arrested for Burglary in Vernon County

Two Tomah residents were arrested late Friday afternoon in conjunction with a residential burglary investigation in Viroqua. Vernon County Sheriff John Spears said in a release, the burglary happened at a residence on County Road SS in Viroqua when the homeowner was gone. Significant documents and cash were taken from the home. Spears said the stolen items were found in a motel room in Mauston Friday night. Police arrested 25-year-old Katie Wood and 34-year-old Randy Harmel, both of Tomah. Wood and Harem are both being held in the Vernon County Jail and await a bail hearing Monday. Charges will be sought through the Vernon County District Attorney and more arrests could be forthcoming.


Police Officer Hurt By New Lisbon Bar Bouncer

(New Lisbon, WI)  —  A bouncer at a bar in New Lisbon could go to prison for up to six years for injuring a police officer.  Police were called to the Detour Bar and Grill last month for a man who was said to be unconscious and bleeding.  Fifty-six-year-old Michael Breunig wouldn’t let police enter the bar and when they tried to take him into custody, he started fighting them.  One officer suffered an arm injury. Breunig is charged with battery to a law enforcement officer, threat to a law enforcement officer, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct. He has an initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.

Two Arrested in Meth Lab Bust in Vernon County

Two people were arrested early Friday afternoon after police found a portable shake-and-bake meth lab at a Viola mobile home. The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office found a man and a woman inside, along with multiple bottles containing meth. Authorities also found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the mobile home. The man and woman were arrested and their names have not been released. The sheriff’s department is investigating whether the man and the woman were selling the meth. The arrests were part of an ongoing investigation between the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Viola Police Department, and Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation.

SHERIFF JOHN SPEARS REPORTS THE FOLLOWING ONGOING ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR AND NARRATIVE EXCERPTS FROM THE WEEK ENDING February 22, 2016.

2/17             Betty Hogan of Waukon, IA, was traveling east on Main Street in the Village of DeSoto.  Betty crashed into a legally parked vehicle.  Both vehicles were towed due to moderate damage.  No injuries were reported.

2/17             Rogelio Kohler of Chaseburg was traveling east, down a hill, on County Road K in the Town of Hamburg.  Kohler’s vehicle began to slide to the left and skidded on the wet sand.  The vehicle slid off the right side of the road, went into the ditch, and hit a pile of snow.  The vehicle overturned, hit a rock embankment, and came to a rest on its roof.  No injuries incurred.  The vehicle received severe damage and was towed.

2/18             Tyler Anderson, Cashton, was traveling southbound on State Highway 162, in the Town of Hamburg.  Anderson hit a deer that was crossing the road.  Anderson swerved to the right, struck the guardrail, traveled down the embankment, and struck a fence before coming to a rest.  No injuries were sustained.  The vehicle had moderate damage.

2/20             Steven Molenda, La Farge, was traveling northbound on State Highway 131, in the Town of Whitestown.  Due to the icy roads, Molenda lost control while negotiating a curve, and struck the guardrail.  Molenda and the other occupant received no injuries.  The vehicle was towed due to very severe damage.

2/20             Charish Goss of La Farge was traveling westbound on State Highway 82, in the Town of Webster.  Goss lost control on an icy spot on the roadway, and hit a guardrail.  No injuries were reported.  The vehicle received moderate damage.

A New Lisbon Man Charged with Second Degree Sexual Assault of a Child

A New Lisbon man has been charged with second degree sexual assault of a child under 16. A criminal complaint filed in Juneau County charges 22-year-old Dakota Myer with two felonies, with one being incest. The complaint alleges that in the month of February this year at a residence in the Town of Clearfield, Myer had sexual contact with the victim. A cash bond of $10,000 has been set for Myer and he is to have no contact with the victim, victim’s family or residence, or anyone under the age of 18. There is an initial appearance scheduled for Myer for March 9.  As with any defendant, Myer is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Kind has primary challenger in 3rd district

Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind has a Democratic primary challenger. Retired history teacher Myron Buchholz, of Eau Claire, has announced his campaign for the 3rd Congressional District of western Wisconsin. Buchholz serves on the board of the Chippewa valley Chapter of American Civil Liberties Union. He says he answering the “call” from presidential candidate Bernie Sanders who has urged “average Americans to step up and take our government back from the billionaire class.” The congressional primary election is Aug. 9.

Names Released in Vernon County Meth Lab Bust

Vernon County officials have released the names of the two individuals who were arrested Friday. 37-year-old Christopher Swadley of Soldiers Grove and 35-year-old Tara Sanders of Viola were taken into custody following the execution of a search warrant at a mobile home in Viola. A quantity of methamphetamine and materials used to manufacture the drug were seized. Swadley and Sanders were held in the Vernon County Jail until Monday, when both appeared in court for a bail hearing. Swadley was released on a $5,000 signature bond and Sanders on a $500 signature bond. Charges are being sought through the Vernon County District Attorney’s Office.  Swadley and Sanders are due back in court March 9th.

Single Vehicle Accident Leaves One Injured

DSC04585There was a single vehicle accident in Vernon County Saturday morning. Sheriff John B. Spears said 52-year-old Betsy Morgan of Onalaska was traveling south on State Highway 35 in the Town of Genoa. She had turned left into the wayside or parking area just south of Lock & Dam #8 into the path of a northbound vehicle, driven by 56-year-old Melody Olsen of Lansing, Iowa. Olsen veered avoided a collision, but another northbound vehicle, driven by 42-year-old Paula Finch, also of Lansing, Iowa, tried to avoid the Olsen vehicle. She attempted to turn right into the same parking area, but was unable to make the turn, travelled across the entrance, struck a snow bank, and came to rest in the ditch. Finch sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. Sheriff Spears said Finch was wearing a seatbelt and there was no airbag deployment.  The accident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.


Overdose Death Leads to Homicide Charge for Readstown Woman

A Readstown woman was arrested Monday and charged with selling heroin to a Reedsburg man who died from an overdose on Christmas Day. Reedsburg Police Chief Timothy Becker said police arrested 37-year-old Jessica L. Hughes of Readstown after determining she had sold the heroin to 37-year-old Jonathan E. Steinmetz that caused his death. Family members found Steinmetz dead in a home on Reedsburg’s east side Christmas Day. A toxicology report from the state Crime Laboratory indicated Steinmetz died of a heroin overdose. An investigation determined Steinmetz purchased the heroin from Hughes on Christmas Eve. Hughes was taken to the Sauk County Jail and held pending an appearance in Circuit Court. Chief Becker said a request for a charge of first-degree reckless homicide was forwarded to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Juneau County UW-Extension To Hold “Starting Your Business/Enhancing Your Existing Business” Seminars

The Juneau County UW-Extension is holding a seminar titled “Starting Your Business/Enhancing Your Existing Business” for Juneau County residents. This workshop is a guide to help people prepare a comprehensive business plan and determine if their idea is feasible, to identify questions and problems ones will face in converting an idea into reality and to prepare for starting the business.

There are two levels being offered, The Level I class is offered in Camp Douglas at the Lynxx Telcom on March 2.  The Level II class will be held in Mauston at the UW-Extension Office. It is recommended to attend a Level I seminar before attending the Level II seminar. Participants are encouraged to bring business materials, other data, and lots of ideas.

The instructor of the sessions will be Gary Kirking. Kirking is the Community Resource Development Agent in Juneau County and an Assistant Professor for UW Extension. He has worked with over 400 start up companies in western Wisconsin, and has received state recognition by Governor Tommy Thompson for his entrepreneur and rural development work.

The cost for the sessions is $15 for an individual and $10 for each additional person. The fee includes dinner, refreshments, and program materials. The seminars are from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. To reserve a space, call (608)847-9329.

Representatives for Congressman Kind Hold Open Office Hours

U.S. Rep. Ron Kind announced that next week representatives from his district offices will be available at open office hours in all 18 counties in Wisconsin’s Third Congressional District.

“Our office is always working to be accessible and helpful to residents of central and western Wisconsin,” said Rep. Kind.  “I hope that people will take advantage of these open office hours to come share their thoughts and seek help to solve problems they may be having with a federal agency.”

Rep. Kind’s office can assist people who are having trouble dealing with the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Internal Revenue Service, Immigration and Naturalization Service, and a number of other Federal agencies.

Hillsboro School Board Approves Hiring New Co-Principal

The Hillsboro School Board decided Tuesday night on who would be the next co-principal for the middle school and high school next year. Hillsboro Superintendent Curt Bisarek said the board voted to hire Hillsboro Middle School teacher Chris Koopman as the co-principal. The other candidates included Hillsboro High School teacher, Bob Bothe, and Kewauskum Elementary Principal Tom Fischer. Current Middle School and High School Principal Greg Zimmerman announced his resignation in September, which will be in effect at the end of the school year.

Mauston Common Council Approves Purchases

The Mauston Common Council approved the purchase of a John Deere loader from Brooks Tractor Incorporated at its meeting on Tuesday night. It was the lowest bid out of three different ones, coming in at $185,000. Public Works Director Rob Nelson said this bid from Brooks Tractor came in about $10,000 less than the other two bids. The council also approved the purchase of a snow plow from Wausau Everest in the amount of $18,712. The council approved both purchases unanimously. Vouchers in the amount of $1,565,917.51 were approved by the council. There was also the first reading of Ordinance 2016-1083 for adopting and enacting a new code for the City of Mauston. City Administrator Nathan Thiel said this is to remove any duplication as well as making sure it references the correct Wisconsin Statutes. No action was taken with the ordinance and it will come before the council in two weeks for a second reading.
