Interstate accident

A Hartland man, 51-year old Brian May, was injured following a one-vehicle rollover accident on the Interstate Thursday morning.  The State Patrol said, “Dispatch had received several complaints of a west bound vehicle being driven erratically on I90/94 in Juneau County.  The trooper was about a mile and a half behind the car when it rolled in the median at the Juneau/Monroe County Line near Oakdale.  May was transported to Gundersen Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

Downtown Mauston shooting

Authorities are investigating a shooting in downtown Mauston.  Mauston Police Chief Mark Messer said about 12:10am Friday morning the Juneau County dispatch received several calls about a shooting that took place in the 300-block of Eest State Street behind P.J.s Bar and Grill.  There were two female victims.  One of the victims was pronounced dead by the Juneau County Coroner.  Law enforcement has a man in custody and the public is not in danger.  Names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family members.  Downtown Mauston traffic was rerouted for several hours during the investigation.  Name of the shooter is being withheld pending completion of autopsy.  The suspect is anticipated to be in court on Monday, June 3rd, 2013.

Child Assault-Probation

SPARTA, Wis. (AP) – A Tomah man has been sentenced to probation and jail time for sexually assaulting a child dozens of times.  Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Mark Goodman sentenced 19-year-old Shawn Mayberry on ten years’ probation and one year in jail with work-release privileges. Mayberry pleaded no contest to three felonies, including first-degree child sexual assault.  A criminal complaint says Mayberry began assaulting the girl when he was about 15 or 16. The victim, now a teen, told authorities Mayberry assaulted her 60 to 70 times over three years.   The complaint says the victim came forward in November and said Mayberry’s brother, Holden, began molesting her in 2005 when she was 8 years and continued for three years. Pickup strikes tree

Two Reedsburg man were injured when a pickup left the roadway and struck a tree in southern Juneau County.  The deputy said Thursday morning about 5:50am 21-year old Darren Helm was traveling south on County Road ‘K’ near Fitzgerald Road in the Town of Seven Mile Creek when he lost control while rounding a curve.  He told the deputy he was going about 40-miles per hour and there was loose gravel on the roadway.  A passenger, 27-year old Quinton Josett, was med-flown to a Madison hospital with incapacitating injuries.  Helm was medically transported to a local hospital.  He was cited for ‘failure to keep vehicle under control’ and ‘operating motor vehicle without proof of insurance.’  His fines totaled $223.10.

 

Necedah man cited

A Necedah man was cited as a result of a two-vehicle accident south of Necedah Wednesday afternoon.  The deputy said about 2:20pm 39-year old Thomas Zaft was stopped at the Highway 80 stop sign at the Highway 58 intersection.  A semi was turning west from Highway 80 onto Highway 80. Zaft did not see a south bound car on Highway 80 being driven by 61-year old Nancy Krueger of Necedah and both vehicles collided.  No one was injured.  Zaft was cited for ‘failure to yield right-of-way from stop sign’ and fined $175.30.

Aluminum canoe stolen

An aluminum canoe was stolen from property on 41st street in the Town of Germantown.  The deputy said the Sears brand canoe had a blue metal emblem on the front.  Authorities contacted Manthey Salvage to try and locate the boat.  Several boats and an aluminum dock were located, but they were buried at the bottom More >

A Lyndon Station man has been charged with disorderly conduct.  Police said Sunday, May 26th, 2013, 30-year old Timothy Hale allegedly got into an altercation with his fiancé regarding a phone call from another woman.


Necedah man injured

A Necedah man was injured as a result of a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon.  Monroe County Sheriff’s authorities said, “26-year old Caleb Trevorrow was traveling south on Funnel Road in the Town of Oakdale and stopped at the stop sign at Highway 12/16.  Trevorrow entered the intersection and struck an east bound car traveling on Highway 12/16 being operated by an Onalaska man, 58-year old Rollin Clark.  The impact caused the Trevorrow pickup to overturn and strike a power pole guide wire.  Trevorrow was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.  He was medically transported to Tomah Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Clark was injured but was not taken to a hospital.”

Construction of Highway 58/82 re-designation and roundabout in the City of Mauston begins Monday, June 3rd, 2013.  East Grayside and South Union Street will be closed due to underground work and reconstruction of the roadway.

JC-AIRS Grandstand Ribbon Cutting

“We have a dream,” said Wayne Olson, a member of the Juneau County Agriculture, Industrial, and Recreational Society Board Saturday morning.  The JC-AIRS held a ribbon cutting ceremony at Veterans Park in Mauston.  “Initially the Fair Board and the City had big plans for the fairgrounds, but because of the economy the plans had to be downsized,” said Olson.    Saturday morning the JC- Airs thanked the Ron and Barb Brunner Foundation for its $100,000 donation to pay-off the $92,000 loan for the bleachers signed by the Walsh family.  And also thanked donations from the Don Burnstad Foundation, Manthey Salvage, and countless others.  Assembly Representative Ed Brooks said, “Many things in life are accomplished incrementally.”  Fair Board President Harold Seebecker said, “The new bleachers seat 1500 which includes handicap space for wheelchairs.  The total cost was $124,900.  The blacktop platform was laid in 2012 at a cost of $11,000.  Our next project is money being raised for  the Dairy Barn Memorial Fund in progress with the initial donation from the Holig family.”

5/27  A burglary occurred at Great River Roadhouse, DeSoto.  A window was damaged and cash was stolen.

5/28  A Pedretti Lane road sign was stolen in Town of Genoa.

5/28  John Selin, Viroqua, started to leave the intersection of County Road Y and County Road B, Town of Jefferson, when he saw an oncoming motorcycle.  He stopped and backed up, striking a squad car driven by Lucas Sellers, Viroqua.  No injuries were reported.

6/1  Three burglaries were reported in Village of Stoddard:

1)    Approximately 14 Fishing rods and a tackle box with a large amount of tackle stolen from a shed on North Pearl Street;

2)   Liquor, Ryobi combo tool kit, and a battery charger from an unattached garage on North Pearl Street;

3)   Unknown items from a shed on North Pearl Street.

6/2  A black, 16 foot flatbed trailer with white rims was stolen from a yard on Carlson Ridge Road, Town of Christiana.

Adams County Conservationist resigns

Adams County Conservationist submitted his letter of resignation last month.  Chris Murphy said, “I have served 11-years as Adams County Land and Water Conservationist.  It was my choice to leave and pursue an opportunity of employment with a private company which I will not reveal until I leave Adams County.”  His resignation is effective June 30th, 2013.  The Adams County Land and Water Conservation Committee Chair, Supervisor Al Sabastiani stated in a letter to Murphy, “On behalf of the members of the oversight committee, we accept you letter of resignation and thank you for your eleven years of service to Adams County.”  The letter also listed the many of Murphy’s accomplishments including organizing the volunteer citizen stream monitoring program and applying and receiving approximately 3.4-million dollars of grant funding.  More recently, Murphy had been instrumental in attempting to introduce the area to an Australian company, GEITS, and its innovative technology in reducing the phospherous in Lake Petenwell.

 

Child abuse trial

Jury selection started Tuesday for the trial of a Milwaukee man charged with child abuse.  30-year old Eric Roider was accused of child abuse and causing mental harm to a child at a residence in the Town of Necedah in July of 2011.  Roider is currently incarcerated at the Waupun prison.

Child support warrant

A Mauston man was arrested on a warrant.  Police said Sunday night 52-year old Mark Largent was arrested on a Sauk County body-only child support warrant.  He was located at an apartment in the 100-block of Maine Street in the City of Mauston.


Worthless check

A Camp Douglas man was cited for issuing a worthless check.  Police said in April 2013 45-year old Steven Wells wrote a check to Northside Mobile for $21.04.  The check was returned for non-sufficient funds.  The Mauston gas station is asking for a total restitution of $46.04 which includes a service fee.  Wells was fined More >

A Mauston woman was taken into custody Monday.  Police said 21-year old Ashley Herritz was allegedly involved in a physical altercation at a residence in the 200-block of Elm Street in the City of Mauston.  She has been tentatively charged with disorderly conduct—domestic abuse.

Retired Mauston Police Officer dies

A retired Mauston Police Officer has died at the age of 65.  Mauston Police Chief Mark Messer says, “Gary Kalan served almost an entire career at the Mauston PD.  He blended well with community and the residents.  Kalan had a great sense of humor and lightened everybody’s day. He was an exemplary Mauston Officer and very patriotic.  We were fortunate to have him serving the City.  Kalan will be remembered by all.”  Kalan died Saturday, June 1st, 2013 at the Madison VA Hospital.  Kalan was a Viet Nam war veteran.  He served at the East Troy Police Department before coming to Mauston in March 1978.  Kalan retired in November 2004 after serving 26-years at the Mauston PD.  “Visitation will be Friday, June 7th, 2013 from 4pm until 8pm at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mauston across from the high school.  Visitation again prior to the 11am service at the church.   There will be a short processional followed by a luncheon at the church,” said Messer.

Shooting victim in critical condition

Two-million dollar cash bond for a military man accused in the shooting death of a Mauston woman and injuring a second woman.  29-year old Cody Treul was in court via video conferencing from the Juneau County Jail Monday afternoon.  His court appointed attorney had requested a 100-thousand dollar bond and argued that Treul was a member of the Wisconsin Air National Guard and has been employed at Volk Field at Camp Douglas for 6-years.   He had served in the Air Force for four-years and has reached the rank of Master Sergeant E-7.  Judge Paul Curran accepted the recommendation of Juneau County District Attorney Mike Solovey and set bail at a 2-million dollar cash bond.  The deceased, 29-year old Gail Howland of Mauston was shot multiple times in the early morning hours of Friday, May 31st, 2013, behind a bar in downtown Mauston.  She was pronounced dead at Mile Bluff Medical Center.  A second woman, 23-year old Ebony Lasher of Mauston, was med-flown to a Madison hospital in serious condition with gunshot wounds.  “As of Monday morning, Lasher was listed in critical condition,”  said Mauston Police Chief Mark Messer.
