Smoking pot at nursing home
ATVs crash
Two ATVs collided last month near Elroy. The DNR Warden said on Sunday, July 14th, 2013, 21-year old Michael Fletcher of West Chicago, IL was traveling on a trail on private property in the Town of Plymouth. As he entered a corner, a New Lisbon man, 20-year old Jacob Kibler, was traveling towards Fletcher and the two ATVs collided. Initially both all-terrain vehicles were traveling in the same direction, and then Kibler turned around and headed towards Fletcher’s direction without him knowing it. Both vehicles were going about 10mph. Kibler received a head contusion.
Semi/car crash
A Reedsville man was seriously injured as a result of a semi-car accident west of Necedah Tuesday morning. The deputy said about 5:45am 21-year old Brandon Haelfrisch was traveling west on Highway 21 near 22nd Street when the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am crossed the center line and struck a 2008 Peterbilt semi being operated by a Baileys Harbor, WI man, 45-year old Francis Tanck. The driver of the semi was uninjured. A witness told the deputy that Haelfrisch had crossed the centerline three times with no oncoming traffic. The fourth time the operator of the semi moved over to avoid a head-on collision. The car struck the side of the semi and was sucked underneath the rear tire and careened into the ditch. The airbag had deployed and Haelfrisch exited out the passenger side of the car. He was medically transported and cited for ‘failure to keep vehicle under control’ and ‘unsafe lane deviation’. His fines totaled $388.40.
Adams County body-only warrant
A rural Mauston man was taken into custody on an out-of county warrant. The deputy said Wednesday afternoon he initially responded to a residence on County Road ‘G’ in the Town of Lemonweir for a disturbance. But following an investigation, neither party wanted to file a complaint. A records check of a third person at the residence, 53-year old Thomas Virnig, revealed he was wanted on an Adams County warrant. Virnig was arrested and transported to the Juneau County Jail.
Pursuit ends in crash
A high speed chase in Juneau County resulted in the suspect vehicle crashing. According to the criminal complaint, Wednesday afternoon about 1pm the deputy was responding to a residence on 15th Avenue in the Town of Lemonweir for a burglary when he met a vehicle matching the description leaving the residence traveling north. The deputy attempted a traffic stop but the operator, 20-year old Tyler Murray of Lime Ridge, accelerated instead. The deputy pursued for over a mile until the vehicle crashed into the ditch while Murray was rounding a curve. He was arrested and transported to the Juneau County Jail. A search of the vehicle revealed items stolen from the residence which included two handguns, two flat screen TVs, a Makita miter saw, a computer, a portable DVD player, a Sony game system, and various tools with an estimated value of $3105. Murray has been charged with burglary-arming self with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, attempting to flee a traffic officer, and theft. During a court hearing Thursday, bail was set at a $10,000 signature bond and Murray was placed on a probation hold. He is also to have no contact with the victims.
Forgery accusations
Four area residents have been charged with being a party to forgery. According to the complaint, in November 2012 44-year old Shawnya Goetz of Mauston, 34-year old Nicholas Goetz of Baraboo, 17-year old Tiffany Coleman and 18-year old Chad Bevan of Mauston, were allegedly involved in issuing stolen checks at a bank in Lake Delton for cash and at the M&M Sports shop near New Lisbon to purchase a pink camouflage compound bow. The stolen checks were also allegedly used to pay some traffic tickets and a vehicle registration.
Monroe County National Night Out
contributed…..A popular nationwide safety night will take place next week in Tomah. The Monroe County National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6th, 2013, in Tomah’s Winnebago Park. Coordinated by the Tomah Memorial Hospital Community Outreach Department, the 11th Annual Monroe County Night Out runs from 4pm until 8pm. Tomah Police Lieutenant Mark Nicholson says, “The event helps residents learn how to keep safe, while curtailing area crime.” There is no charge for the event which includes a bike safety expo and hands-on exhibits. Officials remind those attending to use the Tomah High School parking lot located directly across from Winnebago Park. Residents can also help community members by bringing non-perishable food items. Carnival games will be available for food donations that will be given to Tomah’s ‘Neighbor for Neighbor’ Food Pantry.
Algae Blooms
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning swimmers and boaters to watch out for blue-green algae blooms. The agency says bloom reports typically spike in August because the water has warmed up and conditions are most conducive for algae growth. Some algal species produce toxins that can cause a range of ailments, including stomach aches, flue-like symptoms, rashes and hives. DNR experts say people wade in up to their knees and can’t see their feet they should get out of the water. People also should wash off after swimming in any lake or pond and rinse their pets off to prevent them from ingesting any blue-green algae on their fur.
Fatal crash in Tomah
A Tomah woman died as a result of injuries received in a three-vehicle accident in the City of Tomah Thursday afternoon. Police said about 3:10pm officers responded to the crash at the intersection of Superior Avenue and Veterans Street. Shortly after arriving, it was determined that the driver of one of the vehicles, a 29-year old Tomah woman was deceased. The operator of the second vehicle was transported to Tomah Memorial Hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The operator of the third vehicle was uninjured. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The name of the deceased has not been released.
New Ropes Course at Royall
The Royall School Board met in Special Session Thursday night and approved a new ropes course and electrical upgrade. “A pole behind the school will be removed and the wires will be moved underground to allow space for the new ropes course,” said School Superintendent Mark Gruen. The cost for the ropes course is $42,000 funded by the PEP Grant. The electrical upgrade will be done in two parts. During the first phase, the pole will be moved underground at a cost of $15,000 and the second phase of the upgrade will cost $4,000. In personnel issues, the Board approved hiring a half-time Chemistry teacher, Christopher Madden, and a full-time 6th grade teacher, Josh Potter, both are first-time teachers. Following a Closed Session, the Board reported the termination of the middle school secretary, Anita Czajka.
Battery at PJs Bar
A fight occurred at PJs Bar in downtown Mauston last week. According to the criminal complaint, last Friday night a Mauston police officer responded to Mile Bluff Medical Center ER for a battery complaint. The victim told the officer he was sucker punched in the face in the outside smoking area behind the bar. Investigation revealed the suspect, 35-year old Scottie Warren of Mauston , also had a hand injury that required an hourly IV of antibiotics. Warren has been charged with substantial battery and disorderly conduct. The victim suffered a fractured bone, a lose tooth, and required stitches inside his mouth and outside on his chin. Because of his injuries requiring hourly medical care, the officer unarrested Warren and he is summoned to appear in court on September 11th, 2013.

Worthless check
A Mauston woman was cited for issuing a worthless check. Police said last month 30-year old Juanita Thompson wrote a check to the Juneau County Clerk’s Office for $85. The check was returned for non-sufficient funds. Thompson was fined $202.20. The County Clerk Office is seeking restitution of the $85.
Lieutenant-Enticement
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) – A Wisconsin Rapids police lieutenant is being held on $20,000 cash bond following a court appearance on possible child enticement charges. Forty-one-year-old Steven Lowe resigned from the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department following his arrest Wednesday. Authorities say Lowe was being held on possible charges of child enticement, using a computer to facilitate a sex crime and child exploitation. During a court appearance Thursday in Wood County, Lowe said he voluntarily talked to investigators. The Daily Tribune Media (http://wrtnews.co/13BaTaT ) reports court documents say Lowe is accused of impersonating a teenage girl online to try to get juvenile boys to send him nude pictures. It wasn’t immediately clear if Lowe has retained an attorney. Wood County Clerk of Courts Cynthia Cepress says a special prosecutor has not yet been appointed.

Tomah PD ID deceased woman
Authorities have released the name of the Tomah woman who died Thursday afternoon as a result of injuries received in a three-vehicle accident. Tomah police has identified the woman as 29-year old Stevie Jorgensen. 45-year old Deana Brabant received non-life threatening injuries and was medically transported to Tomah Memorial Hospital. 58-year old Dean Pierce was evaluated on scene by EMS and released. The Tomah PD continues to investigate the crash with assistance from the State Patrol. Portions of the intersection of North Superior Avenue and Veterans Street were closed for approximately two hours Thursday afternoon while the accident was being investigated.
Mauston PD dog gets groomed

Null’s Quik Lube www.nullsquiklube.com on Mauston’s east side recently added a pet wash next to its car wash bays. The pet wash is air conditioned and heated, open 24/7, all year round. Owners, Bobbie Null and her husband, Troy, wanted pet owner’s to have the convenience of a year round facility. Friday afternoon handler Officer Eric Sanner washed Mauston K-9 dog, Kantor, in the All Paws Pet Wash. The Nulls have donated a year’s worth of pet washes to the Mauston PD for Kantor’s care. Kantor, a 2-year old German shepherd, recently joined the Mauston PD and the Sanner household. Officer Sanner said, “We were recently dispatched to Wood County for mutual aid to track a suicidal man in the woods, and Kantor lead authorities directly to the man and found him safe.”
New Lisbon School registration
contributed…..Registration for all students attending the School District of New Lisbon will be held Thursday August 15th from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the district multipurpose room. The New Lisbon schools have changed its student information system this year and new registration forms for all students attending must be filled out. New login information for the Infinite Campus student information website will also be given out that day. Food service deposits and free/reduced applications may also be filled completed at registration. School staff will be available to answer any questions. Bring along parent/guardian/emergency contact information as well as a list of current medications and allergies.
Registration forms are also available in the District Office or online at the District website (www.newlisbon.k12.wi.us) if you wish to fill them out ahead of time.
Waterfest 2013
Another successful Waterfest boat parade. The weather was beautiful for the 14th Annual Venetian Lights Boat Parade on Castle Rock Lake Saturday night. With 16 boats entered this year, Mike Campagna’s Aliens on Castle Rocket themed boat took Best of Fleet. Campagna travels from Plainfield, Illinois each year to participate. First Place was awarded to Ron and Mary DeYoung’s Tiki Bar boat. Second Place went to Stacey Hansen’s Pirates Ahoy! Swashbucklers’ boat and Third Place to Doug Anderson’s “Mount Kinda-wanna-beer’ boat. Anderson travels from Genoa City each year to participate. Special Mention boats included Ed Krzysczak’s ‘Lighting Up the Night’, Diane and Scot Lutzen’s ‘On Wisconsin’, and Cindy Weiner’s ‘Cruisin Christmas’. Juneau County Economic Development Corporation Administrator and Co-Chair of the Waterfest Foundation, Marilyn Celeschi, says, “The Venetian Lights Boat Parade is organized annually to increase tourism in the area.” Celeschi thanks the boaters who spend hours decorating their boats and the many sponsors and businesses who donate for this annual event.
New interim Fire Chief
The Lyndon Station Village Board met in Special Session Saturday and chose a new Interim Fire Chief. Village President Dave Klicko said, “The Board met with the three candidates, Larry Whaley, Mike Ludke, and Ken Stockrath and chose Whaley as the interim Fire Chief. Whaley will be sworn in as Fire Chief at the regular board meeting on Monday, August 12th, 2013. The Village Board wishes to thank all the applicants for their time and interest in supporting their community. The applicants all showed a strong interest in giving back to the community and working with the Village Board.” Former Fire Chief John Krus resigned effective July 1st, 2013.
