Contributed… “The Mauston Police Department K-9 Unit under the direction of Officer/Handler Eric Sanner is definitely becoming an integral part of the department,’ says Police Chief Mark Messer.  “Since Kantor completed training in the spring of this year, he has been deployed 21-times to date.  Some of the deployments include, searching buildings, sniffing around vehicles, found narcotics, and has been involved in two large scale drug interdictions in the general area.  Kantor and Officer Sanner have met with the children of a summer school program, as well as employees of VARC.  Kantor was utilized for handler protection during the recent homicide in the City, as well as for tracking of a suicidal subject whom was located in Wood County unharmed.  Additionally, Kantor tracked numerous underage drinkers who flet a house party outside of New Lisbon.  Just this past week the K9 Unit assisted the Juneau County Sheriff’s Department in Lyndon Township with a vehicle sniff.  Kantor alerted to the vehicle where loose marijuana was found along with a digital scale in a duffle bag.  He was also used for an area search of a runaway/missing juvenile, as well as clearing a Public Works building found with an open door.  Kantor located 2-grams of marijuana on a traffic stop in the City Wednesday evening, August 7th, 2013, which resulted in an individual being cited for possession of THC.”

FORT MCCOY, Wis. (AP) – Civilian employees at Fort McCoy won’t have to take as many unpaid days off this year as they initially expected.  The workers will have six furlough days, rather than the originally planned 11.  The furloughs were part of sequestration earlier this year that triggered automatic federal spending cuts. But Department of Defense officials say they were able to find about $1.5 billion in savings so the furloughs will end early rather than extend into September.  Linda Fournier is Fort McCoy’s public-affairs officer. She says the decision means most of the 1,500 civilian employees at the base will complete their furlough days by next week.  About 700 Wisconsin National Guard employees are also affected by the furloughs. A spokesman says even with the reduced hours, guard members were ready if needed.
