A new county ordinance has been approved by the Juneau County Board of Supervisors to adopt Wisconsin statute section 947.0125, entitled “Unlawful Use of Computerized Communication Systems.” According to the ordinance, it would provide a prosecutorial alternative to police and law enforcement officials for acts which otherwise would be a violation of state law. It also states that it would be useful in dealing with problems of misuse of computers by minors in and out of schools in Juneau County. There was some discussion regarding why there was a need for such an ordinance when there was a state law for it. Juneau County Corporation Counsel David Lasker said that any violation of the ordinance would not be a criminal offense and would result in a fine or a forfeiture, and it would give county judges more leeway when it comes to dealing with minors. The ordinance passed unanimously.
