There was a five vehicle accident that resulted in eight injuries on I-90 in Monroe County near Tomah on Sunday at mile marker 43. A previous reported accident had caused the traffic to back up to this location. The Wisconsin State Patrol said a silver Honda Accord started to skid from seeing the stopped traffic and struck the rear of a Honda minivan that was in the backup. As the minivan lunged forward from the impact, it struck the rear of a red Pontiac Grand Am. Subsequently, a Toyota Rav4 also failed to observe the stopped traffic and also struck the rear of the Honda minivan. Finally, a green Honda Accord with one occupant also failed to discern the stopped traffic in time and struck the rear of the Rav4 and came to rest ahead of the Honda minivan on the median shoulder. The impact of the green Accord caused the Rav4 to again impact the Honda minivan. All 6 occupants of the Honda minivan and both occupants of the Rav4 sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Tomah Memorial Hospital. Each of the four occupants of the silver Honda Accord refused medical attention. The two occupants of the Grand Am and the driver of the green Honda Accord did not sustain any injuries. Interstate 90 eastbound was closed for approximately 45 minutes for care and transport of injured individuals and removal of 4 of the 5 vehicles via tow operators. The crash investigation is ongoing.
