Vernon County Sheriff John Spears Reports

SHERIFF JOHN SPEARS REPORTS THE FOLLOWING ONGOING ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR AND NARRATIVE EXCERPTS FROM THE WEEK ENDING December 29, 2014.

12/22  Emily Larson, La Farge, lost control of her vehicle on County Road C, Town of Greenwood.  She went off road, striking a fence belonging to Scott Stanek, but reported no injuries.

12/22  Four mailboxes on a stand were destroyed in the night hours on County Road O, Town of Bergen.

12/23  A three car crash was reported on US Highway 14, Town of Christiana.  James Poellinger, Stoddard, attempted to put his vehicle into 4 wheel drive while negotiating a curve at highway speed.  He crossed the oncoming traffic lane striking vehicles driven by John Reschke, Westby, and Jennifer Lucas, Westby.  All three vehicles ended up off road and no injuries were reported.

12/23  Duane Hirschfield, Viola, lost control of his vehicle on US Highway 14, Town of Franklin.  He crossed the oncoming traffic lane and struck the guardrail, but claimed no injury.

12/23  Orville Haynes, Soldiers Grove, lost control of his vehicle on US Highway 14, Town of Franklin.  He crossed the oncoming traffic lane and drove into a deep ditch.  No injuries were reported at the time of the crash.

12/23  Theodore Welton, Westby, lost control of his vehicle on a curve of East Bloomingdale Road, Town of Clinton.  He crossed the oncoming traffic lane and went through a fence belonging to Eli Yoder.  No injuries occurred.

12/23  Cindy Makal, Hillsboro, was unable to stop at the stop sign on Lovers Lane, intersecting with County Road WW, Town of Hillsboro.  She crossed both lanes of WW, went down an embankment and overturned.  She reported no injuries.

12/24  Joseph Vanevenhoven, DeSoto, lost control of his vehicle on a curve of State Highway 82, Town of Viroqua.  He left the highway, drove up an embankment and overturned into the ditch, but no injuries were claimed in the crash.

12/24  Two incidents of identity theft were reported.  In one case it appears that a fraudulent unemployment compensation claim was filed, using the victim’s Social Security number.  The incident was brought to the attention of the victim by a letter from Department of Workforce Development, Unemployment Insurance Division.  The second case first involved a fraudulent application for Social Security benefits.  A few months later the victim was notified through his employer that a fraudulent unemployment compensation claim had been filed.

12/29                3 reportable car/deer crashes:

Sharon Mueller, DeSoto, on State Highway 56, Town of Genoa;

Janice Streeter, Wilton, on State Highway 131, Village of Ontario;

Susan Burkhamer, Viola, on US Highway 14, Town of Hamburg.
