In a full gymnasium, Mauston High School helped celebrate Veterans Day Wednesday morning. The program started with a tribute video “Remember Me” by Lizzie Palmer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem. The welcome was done by Mauston High School Principal Jim Dillin in which he stated that Veterans Day was a day to celebrate veterans and to thank them for their service. Joe Jaeggi from American Legion Post 2114 in Mauston gave the opening remarks. He said, “We are commemorating the service of the veterans of all wars. We remember how men and women set aside their civilian pursuits to serve their nation’s cause.” Several student speakers read letters from or to veterans. The Mauston Concert Choir, along with the Mauston High School Jazz band helped honor the veterans with select numbers that were playing during the program: “Blades of Grass and Pure White Stones” and “America the Beautiful”. The guest speaker was High School Senior Rylee Jopling. Jopling is the daughter of a veteran. She talked about what veterans mean to her. “To me, a veteran is a hero, someone honorable, someone who loves their country, and someone who believes in America and everything that it stands for.”Jopling said the veterans in her life, both family and friends, have taught her about integrity, service, and sacrifice. After Jopling’s speech, Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” played. Jaeggi then gave the closing remarks. He said, “The program was concluded with the firing of rifle shots, Taps and the retiring of the colors.
