New Lisbon High School Principal Gary Sytfestad will face a Misdemeanor Battery Charge and a Disorderly Conduct Charge for an altercation with a student taken place on May 7th. The charges were filed by the Juneau County Circuit Court on May 18th. In the criminal complaint evidence in the case includes New Lisbon Schools video surveillance. In the victims statement, he states him and a friend were discussing video games when a swear word was allegedly used. According to the victims complaint, Sytfestad came up pushed him against a locker and twisted his nipples causing the student pain. The New Lisbon School Board suspended Sytfestad for one week. Sytfestad apologized to the student body for his actions during an assembly.

Driver Of Big Rig Which Hit School Bus Charged With OWI
The driver of the 18-wheeler which slammed into the back of a school bus this week faces O-W-I charges. Forty-two-year-old Wayne Murphy of Indianapolis is being held in the Columbia County Jail. A 15-year-old Milwaukee girl who was sitting in the back of the bus, Alexis Jenkins, is at Children’s Hospital in Madison listed in critical condition. A second student is in good condition. Twenty people on the bus from Hope Christian School were injured while they were on a field trip to the Wisconsin Dells. The bus was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 39 near DeForest when it was hit.

New Lisbon School District Summer Food Service Program
Stressing the importance of offering nutritious meals to children during the summer months, The New Lisbon School District announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program.
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, provides nutritious meals to children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school meals are typically unavailable. Free meals will be made available to children 18 years of age and under. Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well.
The following locations will be serving the free meals this summer:
School District of New Lisbon-Multi-Purpose Room: June 11-June 29, 2018 Time: 10:45-11:30
July 30- August 10, 2018 Time: 11:00-11:30
Meals are provided to eligible children regardless of race, color, national origin, age, gender or disability and there will be no discrimination in the course of meal service.

Iowa Man Threats Puts Sparta High School Graduation on Hold
The Sparta High School graduation ceremony had to be postponed due to threats made by a Dubuque, Iowa man. Police arrested Benjamin Sidie, who made threats about killing his estranged family members attending the graduation. Authorities say most threats were made via text message. Sidie wanted to die by suicide by suicide by cop according to the threats. Police worked with the FBI to locate Sidie in Iowa. The graduation which was canceled hours before the ceremony will be rescheduled according to the Sparta School District.
Informant Helps Authorities Take Down Dells Crack Dealer
A Wisconsin Dells man is facing multiple drug related charges after an informant helped the police bust him. 51 year old Steven Taylor faces 3 charges of Cocaine Delivery and a misdemeanor charge of Driving with a Controlled Substance in His Blood. An informant told a Reedsburg cop in February that Taylor was looking to sell crack. Authorities had the informant by crack from Taylor 3 times over the next two weeks. On the 3rd purchase authorities arrested Taylor and charges were filed May 18th. Taylor has a pre-trial date set for June 15th.

Thieves Hit Veterans’ Graves At Baraboo Cemeteries
Baraboo police are trying to find out who stole flowers from the graves of veterans over the holiday weekend. Police received up to 30 reports from Walnut Hill and St. Joseph’s cemeteries, which are located next to each other. Superintendent Rick Stieve says it has happened multiple times in his 26 years on the job, but it still makes him mad when it happens over the Memorial Day holiday period. Police say they don’t know if there is more than one suspect and they would like to ask why the flowers are being taken.
27 Year Old Mauston Man Leads Authorities on Chase Before Taking Own Life
On Sunday, May 27th, at 11:34 pm, the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office received a report of property damage in Marion Township. The reporting party advised that a family member was upset and had driven his vehicle into other vehicles on the property and left. The calling party gave a description of the vehicle and advised the subject stated he was going to kill himself prior to leaving. The offending vehicle was located in the City of Mauston. When a deputy attempted to stop the vehicle the driver attempted to eledue officers. The chase ensued on Hwy 58 through Necedah. During the chase dispatch was advised that the suject had a rifle. North of Necedah the vehicle went into the Necedah Refuge. The operator of the vehicle did a loop in the refuge and eventually stopped. Due to the fact the subject was armed, he was ordered out of the vehicle by officers who were positioned a safe distance behind the vehicle. Shortly thereafter officers heard a gunshot come from the vehicle. Officers approached the vehicle several minutes later and discovered the subject deceased from a self-inflicted gun-shot wound. The subject, a 27 year old man from Mauston, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Juneau County Coroner’s Office. The name of the man has not yet been released.
Ed Brooks to Serve as Kurtz’s Campaign Treasurer
Rep. Ed Brooks will be giving his time as well as his endorsement to Tony Kurtz’s campaign for the State Assembly this year. The outgoing representative announced this week that he will be serving as the campaign’s treasurer.
“My commitment to the 50th district isn’t ending just because I’m stepping aside;” said Brooks. “I’ve worked hard over the last ten years to give my neighbors a strong voice in the legislature, and Tony has my full support because I know that he’ll be an active, engaged voice for the people in Madison.”
Kurtz, an organic farmer who served 20 years in the Army as a helicopter pilot, was grateful to Brooks for his work and support.
“I’m honored to have Ed as my campaign treasurer,” said Kurtz. “His work on behalf of our rural communities has earned him the support and respect of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. Like Ed, my goal is to be a voice for all the people of the 50th.”
New Lisbon Man Asleep in Car Near Boat Dock Arrested on Drug Charges
A New Lisbon man is facing multiple charges after Juneau County authorities found him asleep in his car on Memorial Day. Authorities reported to a boat dock in the Town of Germantown to do a welfare check on 27 year old Jessie Beenken. Authorities woke up Beenken and noticed he had blood shot eyes and seemed confused. The deputy noticed a green leafy substance between Beenkens lap, he also spotted a black plastic baggy and a brown smoking pipe. Beenken did not answer when asked if he was using drugs. Beenken was placed under arrest for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is also facing 2 counts of Felony Bail Jumping and one charge of Possession of Synthetic Cannabinoid-2nd Offense.
North Side River Walk in Mauston to Welcomes StoryWalk
It’s no longer just a walking trail in Mauston; it’s a StoryWalk trail. It’s part of Hatch Public Libraries StoryWalk project. Mauston’s StoryWalk features a series of 16 panels starting at Hatch Public Library. Visitors visit each panel which contains a page of a book. It ends at panel 16 in Murphy’s Park. The story will change seasonally. The StoryWalk project hopes to encourage outdoor activity, literacy, and the use of Mauston’s new north side river walk. The first and current story to be on the StoryWalk trail is “Good Trick, Walking Stick”.
Lyndon Station Fire Destroys Everything Inside Shed & Barn
A barn and tool shed fire destroyed everything inside including a truck that was believed to have started the fire and also two tractors, the barn and shed were also destroyed. The fire took place in Lyndon Station on May 29th. Firefighters showed up to the blaze just before 4pm. The truck whose engine started on fire was parked near the shed and barn. Firefighters braved the 90 plus degree heat to battle the fire a couple were looked at medically due to the heat. Lyndon Station Fire Chief Whaley said everyone was fine, no one was injured in the fire.
Sand Ridge Inmate Attacks Sand Ridge Employees
An altercation at Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center has a man facing multiple charges. Mauston Police talked to the Sand Ridges Security Director about an altercation that took place on April 26th. Baldwin explained that an inmate, 26 year old Sylvester Johnson, had attacked two Sand Ridge employees. Johnson had attacked and sexually assaulted a female employee, allegedly throwing property bins at her, before going to her and holding her down grabbing her crotch area. The female employee sustained bruises to her head from the property bins. Johnson told police he was upset with the female employee claiming she lied but said he respected Sand Ridge employees. Johnson is facing charges of Threat to a Witness, Battery by Certain Committed Persons – Sexually Violent Person in Secure Facility, Criminal Damage to Property, and Disorderly Conduct.
Ron Kind’s Republican Challenger Steve Toft Believes Facebook Ads Unjustly Censored
A republican challenger to Congressman Ron Kind believes Facebook unjustly censored his campaign ads over Memorial Day weekend. Retired Army officer Steve Toft claims Facebook took down 6 of his ads with little to no explanation. “It is unconscionable that Facebook would target my campaign and our ads for censorship.” said Toft. A Facebook spokesman declined to comment but did provide background on the new Facebook political advertising policy. Under the new policy, designed to help readers know where political content is coming from, advertisers must confirm their identity and location, and political ads must include a “paid for by” label.

Car Trouble Leads To Drug Charge For Richland Center Man
A Richland Center man is facing his 2nd Offense Possession of THC after having car issues near Camp Douglas. The disabled vehicle had 5 occupants, 3 adults and 2 kids. One of the occupants was identified as 37 year old Jonlazaire Burch. Authorities smelled an odor of marijuana emitting from the passenger side window and located a cigarillo with a green leafy substance inside. Burch said he had never been arrested for drug charges before but records show he was convicted of manufacturing/delivering Narcotics in September of 2003 in La Crosse County.
Mauston Students Recognized with Jerry Award
A trio of Mauston students was awarded with a Jerry award. Senior Ryan Williams, 8th grader Allison Lavold, and 6th grader Hannah Rattunde received the award for their performance in Seussical the Musical. The Jerry award recognizes and honors excellence in High School Music Theater.
