Bank of Necedah, American Bank to Merge Together

The Bank of Necedah and American Bank will merge into one entity.  The banks have been sister institutions for the past 15 years.  The merged banks will continue to run in the current Necedah location on 212 South Main Street.  Vice President of Necedah Bank, Amber Lowe believes the merger will allow the bank to better serve the customers with new technologies and tools as well as maintaining and growing its deep commitment to the local community.  American Bank President John Oathouse says “The Banks are working to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible.”  The merger is expected to take effect in late August.

Former Tomah Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for 2015 Shooting

A former Tomah man and current Altoona resident has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he pleaded no contest in the shooting of his friend.  Michael O. Nelson was being tried for the 2015 shooting of Randall Perry.  The shooting took place in Jackson County.  Prosecutors were set to retry Nelson, before Nelson pleaded no contest in March to 2nd Degree Reckless Homicide.  Nelson will be credited for to 520 days he has already served and will have 10 years supervision after his release from prison.  Nelson shot Perry in the chest claiming he didn’t know the rifle was loaded when he pulled the trigger.

Prosecution:  Truck Driver Was On Drug When He Hit School Bus

Prosecutors in Columbia County say the truck driver who slammed his 18-wheeler into the back of a stopped school bus was on drugs at the time.  A judge set bail for 42-year-old Wayne Murphy at 35-thousand dollars during a court appearance late last week.  He’s been in the Columbia County Jail since May 23rd.  Twenty-six people on that bus were hurt, with five suffering critical injuries.  The eighth-graders were on a field trip to the Wisconsin Dells.  The driver from Indiana was working for North Dakota-based Dahl Trucking when he caused the accident on Interstate 39 south of Coloma.

Theft Takes Place in Town of Lyndon Garage

Authorities are looking into a possible theft that took place on Johnson Street in the Town of Lyndon.  The residence claimed to have left their home the morning of May 10th to mow a yard, when they came back their garage door was wide open.  The stolen items included a weed whacker, a Remington 380 semi-automatic handgun with camouflaged colored sides, and a Canik TPG 9mm semi-automatic handgun with a silver slide and black handle.  Anyone with information on this potential theft can call the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office at 608-847-5649.  Callers can remain anonymous.

New Lisbon Man Indicted on Federal Charges of Child Pornography

A New Lisbon man initially charged in Juneau County circuit court with Child Exploitation and other related offenses has now been indicted in Federal court for allegedly producing Child Pornography and Distributing it to Minors.  22 year old Andrew Steiskal had sex with a minor in November of 2017 and created video files of it.  He sent one of those files to another minor.  Steiskal also had a picture on his phone of a girl under the age of 12.  Steiskal has pleaded not guilty on all charges.   If convicted, Steiskal faces a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 years in prison on each production count, five to 20 years on the distribution charge and a maximum of 20 years on the possession charge.

Search of Armenia Home Turns Up with Multiple Drug Related Items and Illegal Firearm

A Nekoosa man and a Nekoosa Woman are facing multiple charges including Possession With Intent to Deliver Cocaine, Possession with Intent to Deliver Psilocin or Psilocybin, and Maintaining a Drug Trafficking Location.  Juneau County Detectives along with other local authorities searched the home of 34 year old Dawn Espinosa & 47 year old Jere Wipfl.  The home is located in Armenia Township.  Authorities had a search warrant looking for guns and ammunition.  They located over 25 drug related items in the bedroom including psilocybin mushrooms, a glass smoking pipe, gem bags, and sale ledgers.  In a vehicle search authorities found more items including a Silver Springfield 9mm mag with 13 rounds, a switchblade knife, and possible ecstasy pills.  In an interview with detectives Espinosa admitted to being addicted to cocaine but denied selling drugs.  Espinosa would not answer any questions about sales ledgers found on her.  Wipfli admitted to being addicted to painkillers during an interview with detectives, when asked about an illegal short barrel firearm he admitted to owning the gun but denied modifying it.

Tractor Rollover occurs in Hillsboro

Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reports a tractor rollover incident that occurred on private property west of Hillsboro, WI.  On June 4, 2018 at 1:04 p.m. the sheriff’s office was alerted to tractor rollover incident.  During the investigation it was learned that Cindy M. Klemp, age 51 of rural Hillsboro was operating a small tractor pulling a brush hog mower attachment.  Klemp reports she hit a washout on her property and the tractor started to roll.  Klemp said she jumped from the tractor as it started to roll.  Hillsboro Fire and EMS arrived on scene and shut the tractor and brush hog off.  Klemp was transported for unknown injuries to Gundersen Health St. Joseph by Hillsboro EMS.  Hillsboro Fire Department was able to upright the tractor.  No reported damage occurred to the tractor.

 

Assisting the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office at the scene was Hillsboro Fire Department and EMS.

 

The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.


Elroy Man Facing Drug Manufacturing Charges

32 year old Nicholas Rentz, of Elroy is in trouble with the law once again, this time stemming from a 2017 drug investigation.  Rentz is being charged with Manufacturing Cocaine and Imitation of Controlled Substance – Party to a Crime.  On June 6, 2017 a confidential informant with the Juneau County Drug Task Force purchased 1 gram of cocaine from a female associated with Rentz.  Rentz had is vehicle parked near the female selling the cocaine and him and the woman talked to each other after the buy.  Authorities took pictures of the two talking.  Authorities took the items purchased by the informant to have them tested.  The item tested positive for cocaine.  The informant also purchased “heroin” from the woman but the test results came back inconclusive.  The female is yet to be charged according to records.

Reedsburg Man Charged with Felony Bail Jumping after Motorcycle Crash

It was a bad break for a Reedsburg man in more than one way.  21 year old Thomas Day was in a motorcycle accident on May 19th in the Town of Lyndon.  Authorities arrived at the accident involving Day and another vehicle.  Day was transported to the Reedsburg hospital for his leg that had been broken in 4 places.  Day had been operating the motorcycle without a valid license which was a violation of his bail.  Day is being charged with Felony Bail Jumping and a misdemeanor charge of Operating Without a License – 3rd Offense.  There were no injuries involving the other vehicle in the crash.

Adams County Woman Facing 4th Offense OWI After Showing Up to Work Drunk

A woman who showed up to work intoxicated is facing her 4th Offense OWI.  Adams County authorities received a call on May 31st from a local business stating a newly hired employee had showed up to work drunk.  Authorities located the described vehicle weaving on the left bound lane.  The car pulled into a driveway and the occupant identified as 39 year old Jessie Callagan, of Arkdale stepped out of the vehicle.  Callagan denied drinking multiple times.  She finally admitted to drinking but denied a sobriety and breathalyzer test.  She did agree to a blood draw before being arrested for the OWI.  She also has a Misdemeanor Bail Jumping charge.

Adams Woman Charged After Giving Man Fentanyl Causing Overdose

An Adams woman is facing multiple charges after letting a male subject snort fentanyl.  On May 30th Adams County authorities received a report of a man not breathing and turning blue in the face, the man was also foaming from the mouth.  The man was taken to the hospital and was finally responsive.  He told authorities 46 year old Wanda Fuller, of Adams had given him a folded up dollar bill containing fentanyl.  The subject snorted it saying he felt fine for a while before waking up to an emergency team reviving him.  Wanda Fuller denied multiple times giving the subject drugs, but finally admitted to doing it because he seemed upset about something.  A search of Fuller’s residence turned up two wrappers containing a white substance tested to be Fentanyl.  Fuller is being charged with First Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Delivery of Schedule I or II Narcotics, and Possession of Narcotic Drugs.

Kendall Man Tries Selling Stolen Firearms in Mauston

A 38 year old Kendall man is facing multiple charges after stealing his brother’s guns and trying to sell them.  On June 5th Mauston Authorities received a call from a subject who claimed a man with a young child tried selling him firearms.  He said the man seemed high on cocaine.  This took place on Gateway Avenue in Mauston.  A Mauston detective made contact with the man identified as Benjamin Winchel.  The detective patted Winchel down to make sure he did not have any weapons on him.  During the pat down the detective found two crack pipes on Winchel.  Winchel told authorities he was trying to get rid of the crack pipes because of the young child in the vehicle.  Winchel also said he had three firearms in his trunk, saying he knew he shouldn’t have them because he was a convicted felon.  He also stated he stole the guns from his brother and was trying to sell them due to money issues.  Authorities called the brother who said he did not give Benjamin Winchel permission to take or sell the guns.  Benjamin Winchel is facing multiple charges including Possession of Firearm By a Felon, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and multiple counts of Bail Jumping.

Monroe County Accident has Fatality

On Thursday, June 7th, at approximately 15:05 a fatal crash occurred in Monroe County on County

Highway M just south of Flint Rd.

A preliminary information indicates that a southbound vehicle on Cth M drifted off the roadway just

north of Flint Rd. The vehicle struck a mailbox before hitting a culvert, rolling at least once before

coming to rest partially in the southbound lane of Cth M. The driver of the vehicle was ejected from

the vehicle and died at the scene. The name of the driver has not yet been released.

On Thursday, June 7th, at approximately 18:24, an injury crash occurred in Juneau County on I90

near Milepost 64 westbound.

preliminary information indicates that a westbound semi-truck came upon a pack of slow moving

vehicles. The driver of the semi swerved towards the ditch line, striking a guardrail before traveling

up an embankment. The trailer of the vehicle ruptured, spilling cargo across the roadway and

hillside. The driver, 57 year old Mark Solheim, of Minnesota was transported to Mile Bluff Medical Center before being air lifted to Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

Joan Elsing Named a Top Woman in the Convenience Store Industry

A local woman has been named a Top Woman in the Convenience Store Industry. Joan Elsing was honored at the Top Women in Convenience awards reception last October, in Chicago. The key note speaker of the event was Marcia Clark, the lead Los Angeles prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial. Elsing was named one of the Senior-Level Leaders – retailers, suppliers or wholesalers with job titles below vice president, including store managers, who are making their mark in the industry even at the early stages of their careers. Elsing oversees all retail operations in north central Wisconsin, which includes 116 stores in seven districts, where she is responsible for the leadership, sales, success and direction of those stores. She joined Kwik Trip in 2000 as a certified assistant store leader, and has held positions including district leader. With the current and rapid growth of Kwik Trip, Elsing has successfully opened 48 new stores and 14 rebuilds.

Golf with a purpose… Support local healthcare

With the warm summer-like days, golfers are looking for any excuse to break out the clubs and tee off on the greens.  Mile Bluff Medical Center Foundation is providing golfers with the perfect excuse to hit the course on Thursday, August 9.

Men and women are invited to golf with a purpose and support local healthcare through the foundation’s 8th Annual Golf Outing at Castle Rock Golf Course.  This challenging 18-hole course has plenty of water, sand and trees to test any golfer.

The festivities swing into action with an 11:30 am registration and a shot-gun start at 12:30 pm.  There will then be an evening reception followed by an awards banquet.

During the event, participants will have many opportunities to win prizes.  There will be a 50/50 raffle, proximity prizes, and games.

Everyone is invited to attend this event, whether it’s to golf, to enjoy the reception and banquet, or to simply support local healthcare.  Golfers will compete in teams of four.  Those who do not have a full team will be paired up with other golfers.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the health of the community through Mile Bluff Medical Center Foundation.  The foundation raises funds to support Mile Bluff Medical Center programs and services.  The foundation’s vision is to build community partnerships that ensure lifelong commitments to healthcare advancement, personal well-being and improvement throughout Mile Bluff’s six-county service area.
